The Muan Airport ( Korean 무안 국제 공항 , Eng. Muan International Airport ) was substituted for the airport Mokpo built. There were security concerns about this airport. The weather there was often very foggy and it only had a narrow runway. On July 26, 1993, Asiana Airlines flight 733 came to a CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ), with 66 passengers and 2 crew members killed.
Nevertheless, the construction of the new airport took from December 1999 to November 2007, almost eight years. In the future there are plans to move international flights from Gwangju Airport to Muan as well. The South Korean island of Jeju can currently be reached from this airport . International destinations are Da Nang in Vietnam, Taipei in Taiwan, Beijing and Shanghai in China and Kitakyushu in Japan.
