The Asiana Airlines Flight 733 (flight number IATA : OZ733 , ICAO : AAR733 ) was a scheduled domestic flight to the South Korean airline Asiana Airlines from Seoul to Mokpo . On 26 July 1993, the Aircraft Accident one happened on this flight Boeing 737-5L9 with the air vehicle registration HL7229 , in which 68 people were killed.

plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-5L9, which was 3 years and 1 month old at the time of the accident. The final assembly of the machine was carried out at Boeing’s plant in Renton , Washington State, and completed its maiden flight on June 14, 1990, before being delivered to the Danish Maersk Air on June 26, 1990 , which approved the machine with the aircraft registration number OY-MAB . The aircraft had the factory number 24805, it was the 1878. Boeing 737 from ongoing production. On November 27, 1992, the aircraft was leased to Asiana Airlines, which approved it with the new aircraft registration HL7229 . The twin - engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two CFMI CFM56-3B1 engines. By the time of the accident, the machine had had a cumulative operating performance of 7,301 operating hours with 5,707 take-offs and landings.

crew

There was a crew of six on board the machine, consisting of the flight captain Hwang In-ki ( Korean : 황인기, Hanja : 黃仁淇, RR : Hwang In-gi . MR : Hwang In'gi ), the first officer Park Tae-hwan ( Korean : 박태환, Hanja: 朴 台 煥, RR : Bak Tae-hwan . MR : Pak T'ae-hwan ) and four flight attendants.

Passengers

The flight from Seoul Gimpo Airport to Mokpo Airport had 110 passengers. Most of the passengers were South Koreans . There were also three Japanese and two US-Americans among the passengers . Many of the passengers were vacationers on their way to the well-known summer vacation resorts on the Yellow Sea .

the accident

On July 26, 1993, the machine took off from Seoul-Gimpo Airport for flight OZ733 . The planned arrival time at Mokpo Airport was 3:15 pm. The weather conditions in Mokpo and Jeollanam-do Province were very difficult that day. It was very windy with heavy rain showers, whereby the weather conditions had little effect on the flight duration and planned arrival time. The pilots tried to land the machine for the first time at 3:24 p.m., but had to make a missed approach . A second attempt to land at 3:28 p.m. also failed. At 15:38, the pilots made a third attempt to land. The machine disappeared from the radar screens at 15:41. At 3:48 p.m., the Boeing 737 was flown into the flank of Ungeo Mountain at an altitude of 800 feet (approx. 240 meters).

Rescue operation

The wreck of the machine was sighted at 3:50 p.m. near the town of Masanri in Haenam County, Jeollanam-do Province, about 7.5 kilometers southwest of Mokpo Airport. Two survivors of the accident ran to the village of Hwawon-myeon at the foot of the mountain for help.

Victim

68 people were killed in the accident, including the two pilots and 66 passengers.

root cause

Asiana Airlines stated after the accident that the machine had been slowed down by the three successive landing attempts and that the machine appeared to have crashed. The runways did not have an instrument landing system . Mokpo Airport was only equipped with a rotary beacon and distance measuring equipment , which is why pilots sometimes had to make several attempts to land. This fact was a contributing factor in the accident. The director general of the South Korean Ministry of Transport, Chung Jong-hwan, said that the actions of Captain Hwang caused the accident. As part of the aircraft accident investigation, a pilot error was found to be the cause of the accident, especially since the descent was initiated while the aircraft was still flying over a mountain peak. The recovered cockpit voice recorder could be heard that after the third attempt to land, the crew had informed air traffic control that the aircraft was deviating from course. It was also determined that Captain Hwang was deliberately flying the aircraft below the safe altitude of 1,600 feet (approx. 490 meters) by saying "OK, 800 feet" a few seconds before the impact.

consequences

It was Asiana Airlines' first fatal accident and to this day (as of April 2020) it is the incident with the most fatalities. After the accident, Asiana Airlines suspended the flight from Seoul-Gimpo to Mokpo. The airline paid compensation to the survivors of the victims.

In response to the accident, the Ministry of Transportation planned to build Muan Airport , which opened in 2007, after which commercial air traffic at Mokpo Airport ceased and the site was repurposed as an air force base. As a result of the accident, Asiana Airlines canceled its order for Boeing 757-200 aircraft and instead ordered Airbus A321 aircraft .

meaning

At the time, it was the most casualty aircraft accident in South Korea, until it was surpassed by Air China Flight 129 in 2002 . It was also the first and most casualty accident with a Boeing 737-500 machine until it was surpassed by Aeroflot flight 821 in 2008 . As of April 2020, both statistics are the second most serious accident.
