The El Carmen district is located in the Chincha province of the Ica region in southwest Peru . The district founded on August 28, 1916 has an area of ​​755 km². At the 2017 census, 13,173 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 8,797, in 2007 11,725. The district administration is located in the 155  m high small town of El Carmen with 2794 inhabitants (as of 2017). El Carmen is 14 km from the sea. The city is located south of the Río Matagente, the southern estuary of the Río San Juan . The city is also located 12 km southeast of the provincial capital Chincha Alta .

The Afro-Peruvian ethnic group is strongly represented in the district. The patron saint is Our Lady on Mount Carmel (Spanish Virgen del Carmen ).

Geographical location

The El Carmen district is located in the extreme south of the Chincha province. The district has a coastline of about 4.5 km on the Pacific Ocean and extends about 55 km inland. The Río Matagente crosses the district not far from the northern district boundary in a westerly direction. Irrigated agriculture is practiced west of the city of El Carmen. To the east and south-east of El Carmen there is desert vegetation. A few kilometers east of El Carmen rise the mountains of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . These reach heights of over 2900 m in the far east of the district. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) crosses the district near the coast in a north-south direction.

The El Carmen district borders in the extreme northwest on the Chincha Baja district , in the north on the Alto Larán district , in the northeast on the Capillas district ( Castrovirreyna province ), in the southeast on the Huancano district ( Pisco province ) and in the south on the Humay districts , Independencia and San Clemente (all in the province of Pisco).
