The Río San Juan (also Río Tantara in the upper reaches ) is an approximately 140 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Peru in the provinces of Castrovirreyna and Chincha .

River course

The Río San Juan arises in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the Aurahuá district at an altitude of about 3900  m at the confluence of the Río Palmadera (left) and Río Huichinga (right). On the Huichinga River, there is a dam at the Huichinga Lagoon. The Río San Juan initially flows in a west-southwest direction, later it turns south. The places Aurahuá , Chupamarca , Tantara and San Juan are on the upper reaches. At river kilometer 77, the Río Huachos meets the Río San Juan on the left. This then turns to the southwest, later to the west. It cuts deep into the mountains. The Río San Juan finally breaks through the last mountain range of the Western Cordillera and reaches the coastal plain. At an altitude of 326  m, it splits into a northern arm, the Río Chico, and a southern arm, the Río Matagente ( ).

The Río Chico runs in a westerly direction, flows south past the town of Chincha Alta and flows into the sea after 24 kilometers at Tambo de Mora ( ).

The Río Matagente flows in a west-southwest direction through the coastal plain and reaches the coast after 25.5 km ( ). Several irrigation channels branch off from the two branches of the estuary. Both river mouths have a sandbank that is only flooded when the water flow is very strong.

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río San Juan covers an area of approximately 3300 km². Further north, the rivers Quebrada Topara and Río Cañete flow to the Pacific, further south the Río Pisco . The mean discharge is 18 m³ / s. During the rainy season from January to April, the river carries most of the water in the year.
