The Aurahuá district is located in the Castrovirreyna province in the Huancavelica region in south-west central Peru . The district was founded on September 6, 1920. It has an area of 347 km². The 2017 census counted 1560 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1898 and in 2007 it was 2140. The district administration is located in the 3470 m high village of Aurahuá with 485 inhabitants. Aurahuá is about 40 km northwest of the provincial capital Castrovirreyna .
Geographical location
The Aurahuá district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the north of the Castrovirreyna province. The Río San Juan (in the upper reaches also Río Tantara) has its headwaters in the district. In the northwest there is a dam with the Laguna Huichinga. In the far east rises the 5,275 m high Chocca. The continental watershed runs along the north-eastern district boundary .
The Aurahuá district borders in the northwest and the north by the district Chupamarca , in the northeast on the district Ascensión ( province of Huancavelica ), in the southeast of the district Castrovirreyna , the south by the district Arma and in the extreme southwest of the district Tantara .
