The Tantara district is located in the Castrovirreyna province in the Huancavelica region in southwest central Peru . The district was founded on January 12, 1921. It has an area of 111 km². The 2017 census counted 684 residents. In 1993 the population was 866, in 2007 it was 780. The district administration is located in the 2882 m high village of Tantara with 360 inhabitants. Tantara is located about 42 km northwest of the provincial capital Castrovirreyna .
Geographical location
The district of Tantara is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the west of the province of Castrovirreyna. The district is located on the east bank of the south-flowing Río San Juan (in the upper reaches also Río Tantara).
The district of Tantara borders in the southwest with the district San Juan , in the west with the district Huamatambo , in the northwest with the district San Pedro de Huacarpana ( province Chincha ), in the extreme northeast with the districts Chupamarca and Aurahuá and in the east with the district Arma .
