The Huamatambo district is located in the Castrovirreyna province in the Huancavelica region in southwest central Peru . The district was established on January 12, 1942. It has an area of ​​59.4 km². The 2017 census counted 409 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 557 and in 2007 it was 447. The district administration is located in the 3056  m high village of Huamatambo with 154 inhabitants. Huamatambo is 44 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Castrovirreyna .

Geographical location

The Huamatambo district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the far west of the Castrovirreyna province. The district is located on the west bank of the south-flowing Río San Juan (in the upper reaches also Río Tantara).

The district of Huamatambo is bordered to the west and north by the districts of San Juan de Yanac and San Pedro de Huacarpana (both in the province of Chincha ), to the east by the district of Tantara and to the south by the district of San Juan .
