The Castrovirreyna district is located in the Castrovirreyna Province in the Huancavelica region in southwest central Peru . The district founded on June 21, 1825 has an area of 923 km². At the 2017 census, 2,929 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 3487, in 2007 3428. The district and provincial administration is located in the 3956 m high town of Castrovirreyna with 1449 inhabitants. Castrovirreyna is located in the river valley of the Río Pacococha, left headwaters of the Río Pisco , 67 km southwest of the regional capital Huancavelica .
Geographical location
The Castrovirreyna District is located in the central east of the Castrovirreyna Province in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . It has a longitudinal extent in SSW-NNE direction of about 64 km. The continental watershed runs along the northern as well as the southeastern district border . The district area is drained over the Río Pisco to the west to the Pacific Ocean .
The Castrovirreyna district borders on the Ticrapo , Cocas , Mollepampa , Huachos , Arma and Aurahuá districts to the west, the Ascensión district to the north, the Huancavelica district to the northeast, the Santa Ana district to the east, and the Pilpichaca district to the southeast ( Province of Huaytará ) and in the south to the district of San Antonio de Cusicancha (also in the Province of Huaytará).
