The Huancavelica District is located in the Huancavelica Province of the Huancavelica Region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of 514.1 km². At the 2017 census, 39,776 people lived in the district. Ten years earlier the population was 37,255. The district administration is located in the provincial and regional capital Huancavelica with 34,655 inhabitants (as of 2017) on the Río Ichu at an altitude of 3660 m .
Geographical location
The Huancavelica district is located in the Andean highlands east of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the Huancavelica province. The Río Ichu and its left source river Río Cachimayo form the northern district boundary. The western district boundary runs along the continental divide .
The district of Huancavelica borders in the northwest with the district Ascensión , in the extreme northeast with the districts Palca and Acoria , in the east with the district Yauli , in the extreme southeast with the district Ccochaccasa ( province Angaraes ), in the south with the districts Huachocolpa and Santa Ana as well to the southwest to the Castrovirreyna District (the last three in the Castrovirreyna Province ).
