The district of Cuenca is located in the province of Huancavelica in the region of Huancavelica in the southwest of central Peru . The district was established on August 17, 1920. It has an area of 55.1 km². The 2017 census counted 1190 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2661, in 2007 it was 2226. The district administration is located in the 3167 m high town of Cuenca with 334 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cuenca is 40 km north of the provincial and regional capital Huancavelica .
Geographical location
The district of Cuenca is located in the arid Andean highlands in the north of the province of Huancavelica. The district is located on the right bank of the Río Mantaro, which flows south-southeast .
The district of Cuenca borders in the west on the districts Moya and Pilchaca , in the northeast on the district Acostambo ( province Tayacaja ), in the southeast on the district Izcuchaca and in the south on the district Conayca .
