The Acoria District is located in the Huancavelica Province of the Huancavelica Region in south-central Peru . With an area of 535.1 km², the district is the largest district in the province. At the 2017 census, 17,800 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 22,656, in 2007 31,299. The population consists predominantly of members of indigenous peoples whose mother tongue is Quechua . The district administration is located in the small town of Acoria with 1280 inhabitants located on the Río Ichu at an altitude of 3167 m (as of 2017). This was founded over 400 years ago by Francisco Pizarro as San Lorenzo .
Geographical location
The Acoria District is located in the northeast of the Huancavelica Province. The city of Acoria is located about 20 km northeast of the regional capital Huancavelica . The district is located in the arid Andean highlands . The Río Ichu River flows through the western part of the district in a northerly direction. The Río Mantaro runs along the northern and northeastern district boundaries.
The Acoria district borders in the north with the districts Ahuaycha , Pampas and Quichuas (all three in the province Tayacaja ), in the east with the districts Cosme ( province Churcampa ), Andabamba and Paucará (the last two in the province Acobamba ), in the south the district of Yauli and in the west to the districts of Huancavelica , Palca , Huando and Mariscal Cáceres .
