The Huando District is located in the Huancavelica Province in the Huancavelica Region in southwest central Peru . The district was established on April 30, 1936. It has an area of 737 km². The 2017 census counted 2148 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2976, in 2007 it was 4005. The seat of the district administration is the 3795 m high town of San José de Acobambilla with 425 inhabitants (as of 2017). San José de Acobambilla is located 40 km west-northwest of the provincial and regional capital Huancavelica .
Geographical location
The Acobambilla district is located in the arid Andean highlands in the far west of the Huancavelica province. The area is drained to the northeast via the Río Anta and the Río Santo, the two source rivers of the Río Vilca . In the far west is the 7.8 km² large lake Laguna Huarmicocha. In the extreme southeast rises the 5328 m high Nevado Citac . The western district boundary runs along the continental divide .
The Acobambilla district borders on the Chupamarca district ( Castrovirreyna province ) in the southwest, the Lincha , Hongos and Cacra districts (all three in the Yauyos province ) in the west, the Congos Alto district ( Huancayo province ) in the north-west and the Vilca district , in the east to the districts of Manta and Nuevo Occoro and in the southeast to the district of Ascensión .
