The Ascensión District is located in the Huancavelica Province of the Huancavelica Region in south-central Peru . The district was formed on June 8, 2000 from parts of the Huancavelica district. It has an area of ​​432.24 km². At the 2017 census, there were 15,566 residents in the district. 10 years earlier the population was 9,735. The district administration is located in the town of Ascensión with 14,915 inhabitants on the Río Ichu at an altitude of 3650  m (as of 2017). This forms a north-western suburb of the provincial and regional capital Huancavelica .

Geographical location

The Ascensión district is located in the Andean highlands east of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the west of the Huancavelica province. The Río Ichu and its left source river Río Cachimayo form the southern district boundary. In the west of the district is the headwaters of the Río Cotay, a tributary of the Río Vilca . The western district boundary runs along the continental divide .

The Ascensión district is bordered to the west by the Aurahuá and Chupamarca districts (both in the Castrovirreyna province ), to the north by the Acobambilla , Nuevo Occoro , Huando and Palca districts , to the east and southeast by the Huancavelica district and to the southwest by the Castrovirreyna district ( Castrovirreyna Province).
