The district of San Juan is located in the province of Castrovirreyna in the Huancavelica region in south-west central Peru . The district was established on January 12, 1942. It has an area of 195 km². The 2017 census counted 712 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 974, in 2007 it was 620. The seat of the district administration is the 1920 m high town of San Juan with 231 inhabitants. San Juan is 35 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Castrovirreyna .
Geographical location
The district of San Juan is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the far west of the province of Castrovirreyna. The Río San Juan (in the upper reaches also Río Tantara) borders the district in the east, in the southeast and in the south.
The district of San Juan is bordered to the west by the districts of Alto Larán and San Juan de Yanac (both in the province of Chincha ), to the north by the district of Huamatambo , to the northeast by the district of Tantara and to the southeast and south by the district of Capillas .
