The Wang'an airport ( Chinese 望安機場 , pinyin Wàng'ān Jīchǎng ) is a small airport in the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It is located on the island of the same name, Wang'an, which belongs to the Penghu Islands (Pescadors).
history
Construction of the airport began in January 1977 and was completed at the end of the same year. The airport was originally under the control of Penghu County . On May 11, 1991, the Taiwanese Civil Airport Authority (TAA) took over management and the airport was reorganized as an auxiliary airport for the much larger airport on the neighboring island of Magong. In June 1994 a new terminal building went into operation and the old asphalt runway was replaced by a concrete runway in 1996. The flight operations were therefore interrupted from March 10 to December 17, 1996.
Flight connections
The only flight connection from Wang'an is served by Daily Air and goes to Kaohsiung Airport . The number of passengers has steadily declined over the past 20 years. In 2016, only 1268 passengers were transported on 142 flights. The main reason is probably that there are much better and more frequent connections from the much larger Magong Airport on the neighboring island. Since the operation of the airport, like all small regional airports in Taiwan, has to be subsidized considerably by the Taiwanese Aviation Authority, it seems uncertain how long the flight operations on Wang'an will be maintained.
