The airfield was used as a military airfield during World War II and the Cold War . Part of the area is still a military area.

history

In 1936 the command of the 4th control zone , 4ème Région Aérienne (4e RA), or Région Aérienne Méditerranée in Aix-en-Provence was set up.

During the Second World War, the German Air Force also used the airfield for a few months. In January / February 1944 the Fw 190A of the entire I. Group of Jagdgeschwader 2 (JG 2) were stationed here, some of which remained here until May 1944. Another user for a few days in the following June was Jagdgruppe 200 equipped with Bf 109G .

After the withdrawal of the German troops, the United States Army Air Forces Airfield Y.15 , the Allied code name, took over the airfield. Later this was under the control of the British Royal Air Force .

It was returned to the French authorities after the end of the war. In 1947, today's Center en route de la navigation aérienne Sud-Est , a district control point , was established here. The airfield was initially used for civilian purposes.

From June 1964 it became a military airfield, Base aérienne 114 Aix-Les Milles . The aviation use by the Armée de l'air was last carried out by a helicopter and school squadron for transport aircraft. Military flight operations ended in summer 2001.

A civil joint use began again in July 1969.

Todays use

In addition to general aviation and aviation clubs, some aviation companies have settled at the airfield. The École nationale de l'aviation civile also has a campus here.

The NATO Helicopter Management Agency and NH90 manufacturer NH Industries , among others, have their headquarters in the industrial area adjacent to the south .
