The airfield Sormovo located in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod .

The former military airfield is operated by the Sokol aircraft factory immediately to the east .

From Sormowo, civilians can also fly in combat aircraft.

Incidents

In August 1981 the test pilot Alexander Konovalov had to get out of his damaged MiG-25R . He operated the ejector seat at a flight speed of Mach 2.6 and at an altitude of 18 kilometers. Konovalov survived the accident and was honored as a Hero of the Russian Federation in 1997 .
