The accident involving Selva Taxi Aéreo occurred on July 29, 1998, when a heavily overloaded Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante of the Brazilian regional airline Selva Taxi Aéreo had to ditch the Manacapuru River on a flight from Manaus to Tefé in the Amazon region . In the incident, 12 out of 27 people on board were killed. The Embraer EMB110 is only approved for 21 people.

The aircraft concerned was an Embraer EMB-110P1 Bandeirante built in 1981 with the serial number 110343. The aircraft had the aircraft registration number PT-LGN . The twin-engine regional airliner was with two turboprop engines of the type Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 equipped and approved for 19 passengers and 2 crew members. The maximum take-off weight was 5670 kilograms.

The machine was initially delivered to the Colombian Transcoloniana de Aviación in July 1981 , where it was operated under the aircraft registration number HK-2639 . In April 1985 the Brazilian Companhia Real de Arren Mercantil took over the machine, where it received its last registration number PT-LGN . In November 1990 Aerotáxi Pampulha took over the machine. The last operator Selva Taxi Aéreo had leased the machine since 1997.

The machine made a domestic flight from Manaus to Tefé . The distance of the flight route is 518 kilometers. Although the machine was only approved for 19 passengers, 25 passengers were taken on board. Together with the two crew members, there were 27 people on board. In addition, for economic reasons it was decided to refuel the machine in Manaus, which is a free trade zone , with more kerosene than is necessary for the flight. When taking off, the aircraft weighed 6522 kilograms, which meant that its maximum take-off weight was exceeded by 852 kilograms.

Around 20 minutes after the machine started, there was a sudden drop in the oil pressure in engine number 2. The crew reduced the engine thrust to 72 percent and continued the flight in the direction of Tefé. When the machine was 185 kilometers from Manaus at an altitude of 8500 feet, the oil pressure dropped to 40 psi while the temperature of the turbine exhaust (TGT) rose. The first officer switched off the engine and the captain turned back in the direction of Manaus. At 1:15 p.m., the crew contacted the air traffic control in Manaus and reported that the aircraft was flying back to the airport with only one active engine.

The permissible payload of twin-engine aircraft is usually such that they remain airworthy even after an engine failure. The significantly overloaded Embraer began to lose altitude with only one engine in operation. During the descent, a constant airspeed of 105 knots (approx. 195 km / h) was maintained, which under the given circumstances meant that the stall warning system was repeatedly activated.

To reduce the weight of the machine, the exit above the wings was opened and the passengers' luggage was thrown off in flight. Nevertheless, the machine did not manage to stay in the air as far as Manaus and finally had to make an emergency watering on the Manacapuru River, about 70 kilometers west of the city of the same name and about 100 kilometers west of Manaus.

About 20 minutes after the crew had informed air traffic control about the engine failure, the machine hit the water hard. Since the hull ripped open and the cabin filled with water, the wreck quickly sank into the river. 12 people were killed in the accident, including the two pilots and 10 of the 25 passengers.

consequences

The accident was the only one in the operating history of Selva Taxi Aéreo. The airline founded in 1993 had to cease operations in 1999.
