Tefé , officially Portuguese Município de Tefé , is a political municipality in the interior of the Brazilian state of Amazonas . The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 59,849 inhabitants, who live in a large community area of around 23,692 km² and are called Tefeenser ( tefeenses ). The population density is 2.6 people per km². It ranks sixth out of the state's 62 municipalities. The distance to the capital Manaus is 575 km. The city of Tefé is located on the Rio Tefé river of the same name .
Adjacent communities are Uarini , Alvarães , Coari and Tapauá . At Tefé the Rio Japurá flows into the Amazon , the biome is predominantly tropical rainforest . The Mamirauá protected area, in Portuguese Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá, is located in the municipality .

Local politics
Since the local elections in 2016, the city prefect has been Normando Bessa de Sá des Partido da Mobilização Nacional (PMN) for the 2017 to 2020 term of office .
The legislature lies with a city council ( Câmara Municipal ) made up of elected councilors ( vereadores ).
Population development and ethnic composition
Ethnic groups according to the statistical classification of the IBGE (status 2000 with 64,457 inhabitants, status 2010 with 61,453 inhabitants): Of these, 50,069 inhabitants lived in urban areas in 2010. The population has been declining since 2000 with a concentration on the main town, so in 2000 there were 16,785 inhabitants, but in 2010 only 11,398 inhabitants lived in rural and rainforest areas.
