Maués , officially Município de Maués , is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Amazonas in the Central-Amazonas mesoregion in the Parintins microregion . The municipality is called the City of Guaraná . The city is the 24th largest in Brazil by area. Neighboring cities are Apuí in the south , in the west: Borba , Nova Olinda do Norte , Itacoatiara , in the north: Urucurituba , Boa Vista do Ramos , Barreirinha and in the east: Jacareacanga , Itaituba , Aveiro , Juruti .

history

The place was founded in 1798 on the right bank of the Rio Maués-Açu . Initially the settlement was called Luséia . The Carmelites gave it the name Maués . On June 25, 1833, the settlement was raised to Vila and on May 4, 1896 with the right to self-government to Município de Manés. The founding year 1833 is anchored in the city arms.
