The plane crash in Boufarik was an aircraft accident involving an Ilyushin Il-76 of the Algerian Air Force on April 11, 2018 near the airport of the Algerian capital Boufarik , around 30 kilometers southwest of Algiers . The transport plane was on a domestic flight to the airport in the district capital, Bechar . It crashed into a field shortly after taking off from Boufarik Airport and burned out. According to the Defense Ministry, at least 257 people were killed. The majority of those killed were soldiers and their families as well as 26 members of the Polisario Front. The Frente Polisario itself was based on 30 Sahrawis on board who had previously received medical treatment.
In terms of the number of fatalities, the crash is the most serious in the history of Algerian aviation to date (October 2018).
the accident
According to witness statements, part of the aircraft, presumably a wing, was already on fire before the impact at around 8:00 a.m. local time. The pilots are said to have consciously steered the machine over uninhabited areas in order to prevent victims on the ground.
After the accident, several newspapers reported about the poor condition of the outdated aircraft, but the exact cause of the accident is unknown.
Reactions
The Algerian President Bouteflika proclaimed a three-day state mourning and ordered prayers for the dead on the following Friday . These were held across the country, as well as in other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. For its part, the Frente Polisario ordered a seven-day state mourning for the not generally recognized Democratic Arab Republic of the Sahara . Immediately after the crash, numerous heads of state and government expressed their condolences, including the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Pope Francis .
