Operation Halibur

The operation Halibur ( tetum Operasaun Halibur , literally German  operation collection ) was a joint operation of the National Police of East Timor (PNTL), the Timor Leste Defense Force (F-FDTL) and the International Stabilization Force (ISF) for seizure of East Timorese rebels. Filomeno Paixão from the F-FDTL led the operation. The military commander was Calisto dos Santos (Coliati).

Happening

On February 11, 2008, the rebels attacked President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão in the attack in Dili . Ramos-Horta, one of his bodyguards and an assassin were seriously injured, and the rebel chief Alfredo Alves Reinado died in a firefight.

On February 17th (government resolution 3/2008) the government created the Operasaun Konjunto KOK ( German  Joint Operations Command ), which consisted of members of the F-FDTL and the PNTL. The KOK immediately began Operation Halibur, with the help of the ISF, to increase pressure on the rebels who had been operating since the 2006 riots in East Timor .
