The “Sanicare airplane” in Bad Laer

The Flugzeugcafé Preußisch Oldendorf was a café that was operated in an old passenger propeller aircraft , a decommissioned DC-6 , in Preußisch Oldendorf , a town in the Minden-Lübbecke district , from 1969 to 2003. The plane was not far from the former Holsing furniture store on the southern edge of the village of Preußisch Oldendorf and was later transferred to an industrial park near Bad Laer .

There the DC-6 became known as the " Sanicare aircraft". It is located on the grounds of the health center and is intended to symbolize the new ways of supplying medicines through mail-order pharmacies - the logistics area of the Sanicare mail-order pharmacy is in the immediate vicinity. The aircraft is used for seminars, patient training courses and information events, but it can also be rented for special occasions and even used as a registry office.

History of the aircraft

The aircraft is said to be the oldest DC-6 still in existence and the fourth aircraft of this type ever built. The DC-6, built in 1946, originally belonged to the fleet of the Jordanian royal family, was then on scheduled flights in the USA and arrived in Germany in 1965. It was flown there until the end of the 1960s and, after it was decommissioned in 1969, sold to a private person who turned it into an aircraft café. In the meantime, it was parked in an industrial area and was sold for the symbolic price of one euro to Johannes Mönter, the owner of Sanicare, who, with the financial support of several sponsors, had it transported to Bad Laer and restored in 600 working hours.
