In the aircraft collision at Makhachkala on January 15, 2009, two Ilyushin Il-76MDs belonging to the Russian Interior Ministry collided while approaching Makhachkala airport . Five crew members of the aircraft on the ground were killed in the collision, with the body of the fifth crew member never being found.

Course of events

On January 15, 2009, the Russian Interior Ministry used four of its Il-76MDs to move soldiers and military equipment to Dagestan . The first aircraft with the registration number RA-76825 had previously landed in Makhachkala from the Chkalovsky military airfield and was supposed to return to its home base in Nizhny Novgorod . The second aircraft with registration number RA-76827 was on the approach to land at Makhachkala Airport.

At 20:40 local time, the crew of RA-76825 received the instruction to roll down taxiway 2, which runs parallel to the runway, to the taxi stop location and wait there for take-off clearance. When the crew reported that they had reached the taxi position, they were already 41 meters further and thus only 29 meters away from the runway. At that time there was thick fog at Makhachkala Airport with visibility of 300 to 350 meters, so that the air traffic controllers could not see the aircraft from the tower . The tower gave the crew of RA-76827 permission to land on runway 14. On landing at 20:45 local time, the wing of the RA-76827 hit the cockpit of the RA-76825 and both aircraft caught fire. While everyone on board RA-76827 survived the accident, five crew members of aircraft RA-76825 were killed.

root cause

The cause of the collision was the lack of experience of the crew of RA-76827 with landings in poor and rapidly changing visibility conditions. As soon as the runway lights were visible, the crew switched off the receiver for the ILS and made a visual approach to the airport. When entering a thick cloud of fog, the crew lost sight of the lights and steered the aircraft too far to the left of the runway. The crew forgot the landing lights turn on the aircraft. When the error was noticed at a height of 9 feet, the pilots tried to steer hard to the right to get the aircraft back on the runway. The aircraft landed 1 meter from the left border of the runway and was so far to the left that the aircraft protruded from the runway with its left wing. In addition, the aircraft exceeded the maximum landing weight of 146 tons, so that it was hardly maneuverable on the runway.

During the investigations, it was found that the taxiing position of taxiway 2 was only 91 meters away from the runway, although a minimum distance of 120 meters is required.
