Fluminicola merriami is a rare freshwater snail thatis endemicto the warm water springs in the Pahranagat Valley and the White River Valley in the US state of Nevada . Occasionally the species is classified in the genus Pyrgulopsis . It is named after Clinton Hart Merriam .

description

Fluminicola merriami reaches a case height of 3 mm and a case diameter of 2.5 mm. The case is small, spherically wound, narrow but clear and deeply scar-shaped. The spindle is low-conical and pointed. There are four turns that are a little stepped below the seam. The upper edge section is rather flattened. The edge area and the base are arched. The smooth surface is horn-colored. The mouth is oblique, egg-shaped, angled at the top and broadly rounded at the bottom. The upper portion of the inner lip adheres to the curvature of the body. The lower section is curved without any thickening of the callus.

distribution

Until 1973, Fluminicola merriami was still found frequently in the warm water springs of Ash Springs , on Hot Creek, on the Moormon River and on the Moon River, in the Crystal Spring and in the Hiko Spring. During a search in 1995, the species was not detected in either the Crystal Spring or the Hiko Spring.

status

The small range makes the species very vulnerable to environmental changes. A decrease in the population has been observed since 1973, which can be attributed to the introduction of the coniferous crown snail ( Melanoides tuberculata ). In the Endangered Species Act , Fluminicola merriami is listed in the critically endangered category.
