Rubber balls is the name for all balls that were previously made of rubber and are now mostly made of plastic.

A solid ball made of a medium-hard rubber compound is also called a bouncy ball, superball, dotzball, cross ball or dopsball. Due to the properties of the material, these balls have a low elasticity , but a high bounce, similar to the balls in basketball . They lose only a small part of their kinetic energy to internal deformation and friction processes on impact and bounce and thus retain their speed (more precisely: the amount of their speed) almost completely. This behavior comes very close to the physical concept of elastic shock .

The term "Flummi" is a suitcase word and goes back to a Walt Disney film with the title " The Flying Pauker " ( The Absent Minded Professor , 1961). In it, a professor played by Fred MacMurray invented a "miraculous" rubber compound that can do amazing things. He called this invention "Flubber", a contraction of the English "flying rubber" as a term for the small balls with a diameter of 2 to 6 cm. In the German film dubbing , this "flying rubber" was correctly translated as "flying rubber", contracted to "Flummi". In the later film remake, on the other hand, this word creation was already too much integrated into general linguistic usage to make a powerful film title, which is why the film title " Flubber " remained untranslated during the synchronization.

application

Children usually use rubber balls to throw against fixed resistance. There are interesting constellations of jumping force as a result of elasticity and change in angular momentum with every contact. Furthermore, larger rubber balls (diameter from about 7 cm) are used when juggling over the floor.

Others

In 2005, Sony let 250,000 colorful bouncy balls bounce down the streets of San Francisco to use the video to advertise the " Sony BRAVIA " LCD televisions (see web links).
