Flunitrazolam is a member of the benzodiazepine group that was sold online as a designer drug . It is a strong hypnotic and sedating substance, which is structurally similar to compounds such as flunitrazepam , clonazolam and flubromazolam . It was first definitively identified by an analytical laboratory in Germany in October 2016 and reported to the EMCDDA early warning system and had not previously been described in either the scientific or patent literature. Flunitrazolam was discovered in the 1960s but has never been marketed for reasons unknown.

In Germany, the active ingredient has been subject to the New Psychoactive Substances Act since July 18, 2019 .
