River system number (Norway)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The water body identification number ( REGINE number , Norwegian Vassdragsnummer ) for hydrological catchment areas in Norway is an identifier that can uniquely identify all water bodies with a generic key term.

It has been introduced and is maintained by the Norwegian Directorate for Water Resources and Energy (NVE) .

REGINE (REGIster over NEdbørfelt - “Register of catchment areas”) is the national database for hydrological catchment areas. The shape and size of the REGINE units are determined by watersheds and junctions (unions) of rivers (for example the confluence with important tributaries, lakes, reservoirs). The breakdown shows the structure of the hydrological system in this way.

REGINE is area-based, that is, there are areas called registry units. The whole country, and thus also waterways, is recorded in the register. Regine is strictly hierarchical, that is, it consists of parent and child units. Another subdivision takes place without any consequences for the rest of the register.

The REGINE number is an alphanumeric code structure. Both letters and numbers are used. To facilitate international communication, the letters æ, ø and å are not used. The letters I and O are also excluded because they can easily be confused with the numbers 1 and 0. The letter Z has a special function: it designates the entire catchment area (and only on one level in the hierarchical structure). This is the "owner" (parent unit) or the other letters on the main level. The number 0 indicates the corresponding main, coastal or peripheral area. This is the "owner" of all other digits on the same main level. The REGINE number has a uniform structure. The first three positions are reserved for the river basin. This part of the REGINE number only contains digits. It is separated from the rest of the REGINE number with a period.

Thus the area is divided into river basins. Each river basin consists of a Z-area, which includes the actual catchment area, and a 0-area, which at the highest level contains the adjacent coastal areas that are assigned to the river basin - in addition to the catchment area. This dichotomy also takes place at lower hierarchical levels, with the 0 area then comprising all areas of a sub-river basin that are not in the sub-catchment area.

Examples of water body numbers (REGINE numbers) are:

Waters / catchment area Water code
Glomma 002.Z
Renaelva 002.JZ
Rauma 103.Z
Stabburselva 223.Z
Tanaelva 234.Z
