The Fontaine Bluff is a cliff in the Antarctic Ross Dependency . It rises 6 km west of Cape Murray on the southern flank of the Carlyon Glacier .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it using tellurometer surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the cliff in 1965 after Lieutenant Commander (later Admiral ) Richard Kern Fontaine (1928-2017), Commander of the USS Hissem , which served as a weather ship between 1963 and 1964 in support of supply flights between Christchurch, New Zealand and McMurdo Station .
