Plan drawing of the original well

This wall fountain is one of the so-called Fontaines du décret de Saint-Cloud . The decree of May 2, 1806 provided for 15 street wells to be built in Paris to improve the general water supply for the Parisian population. Ten of the 15 wells have been demolished, mostly as part of Haussmann's redesign measures. Of the five remaining, three are no longer in their original location. Since 1864 the fountain has been on the back of the Fontaine Médicis, which was also redesigned and relocated by Alphonse de Gisors at the time .

Leda and the Swan (1807)

The central motif shows the story of Leda and the swan on a bas-relief . Leda lies bare-chested and surrounded by cattails on the bank of the Evrotas and puts her right arm around a swan, which is the transformed Zeus , who wants to approach Leda in this way. On the left edge of the picture is Eros , which underlines the love theme. The swan's head protrudes from the relief and is made of bronze. The water flowed from its beak. The relief was created by Achille Vallois in 1807 , which can be clearly seen in the signature.

The central relief is framed by two pilasters, each with two entwined dolphins and a trident or a rudder, all elements connected to the water. There is a triangular gable above the Leda relief. The relief there once showed an eagle with a laurel wreath and outstretched wings. The eagle stood in its symbolism for the Premier Empire as well as for Zeus. Today the relief shows a wreath surrounded by oak leaves. A flat dome with two naiads by Jean-Baptiste Klagmann is located above the gable . The original base was supplemented by three water-spouting grimaces . The water runs into a semicircular basin.
