Former was a training occupation in Germany from 1935 to 1997.

General

Molders work in foundries, where they produce molds that are required for the casting of workpieces made of steel , iron or other metals .

Molders work in larger foundries, they work in workshops or machine halls and sometimes on melting furnaces and casting systems.

Professional practice

The prerequisite for the job is usually completed vocational training as a former or foundry mechanic (specializing in hand-molded casting, machine-molded casting, process mechanic in the metallurgical and semi-finished product industry, specializing in non-ferrous metal forming or steel forming).

Since August 1, 1997, the training occupation of former has been abolished and merged into the newly created training occupations:

  • Foundry mechanic specializing in hand-molded casting, machine-molded casting as well as die and chill casting
  • Process mechanic in the metallurgical and semi-finished products industry specializing in iron and steel metallurgy, steel forming, non-ferrous metallurgy and non-ferrous metal forming
  • Metal and bell caster specializing in tin casting, artificial and bell casting and metal casting technology
