Princess Margarethe Beatrice Feodora of Prussia VA (born April 22, 1872 in Potsdam , Neues Palais ; † January 22, 1954 in Schönberg near Kronberg , Hesse ) was Landgravine of Hesse-Kassel by marriage.

origin

Margarethe, called "Mossy" in the family circle , was the youngest daughter of the Crown Prince and later Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm (Friedrich III.) (1831–1888) and his wife, Princess Royal Victoria (1840–1901), the eldest daughter of the British Queen Victoria and her Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . Her paternal grandfather was the first German Emperor and King of Prussia, Wilhelm I. Like her two sisters Sophie and Viktoria , she was very close to her mother and was very fond of the English way of life. She died as the last of the children of Emperor Friedrich III.

On January 25, 1893, she married Prince Friedrich Karl of Hesse , future King of Finland and later head of the Hessen-Kassel branch in the House of Hesse . The harmonious and happy marriage resulted in six sons, including two pairs of twins:

In 1918 Friedrich Karl was elected King of Finland, which had just become independent. Margarethe thus became Queen of Finland and the legal successor of her cousin, Tsarina Alexandra Fjodorovna , who had previously carried the title of Grand Duchess of Finland . Germany's defeat in World War I ended this career as a royal couple after just nine weeks. After his brother's resignation, Friedrich Karl became head of the House of Hessen-Kassel.
