Marie Alexandra of Baden
Princess Marie Alexandra Thyra Viktoria Luise Carola Hilda von Baden (born August 1, 1902 in Salem ; † January 29, 1944 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Baden princess and, through marriage, a member of the House of Hesse .
Life
Princess Marie Alexandra was the only daughter of Maximilian von Baden , who held the office of Chancellor in 1918, and Princess Maria-Luise of Hanover-Cumberland . Her paternal grandparents were Prince Wilhelm von Baden and Princess Maria von Leuchtenberg , a granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and Eugène de Beauharnais , Napoleon's stepson .
On the maternal side, she descended from Ernst August , the last Crown Prince of Hanover, and his wife Thyra , nee Princess of Denmark. Thyra was the youngest daughter of King Christian IX. of Denmark , the father-in-law of Europe and therefore sister of Queen Alexandra of Great Britain and Ireland and Tsarina Maria Feodorovna of Russia . She had a younger brother, Berthold (1906–1963), who later became head of the Baden family.
She spent most of her childhood and youth in Karlsruhe . She received an education for a girl of her class. Marie Alexandra was taught by a private tutor in German, English and French. She also received lessons in mathematics, science and history. A governess looked after her and her brother and taught them handicrafts, playing an instrument and courtly virtues. The family often received a visit from the widespread relatives from Europe. Due to the origin of her grandparents from Russia and Denmark, she also learned basic knowledge of the two national languages.
On September 17, 1924, Marie Alexandra married Wolfgang von Hessen (1896–1989). He was a son of Princess Margarethe of Prussia , the youngest daughter of the 99-day Emperor Friedrich III . The marriage remained childless. Her brother Berthold married Princess Theodora of Greece , sister of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh , in 1931 .
Marie Alexandra was killed in an air raid on Frankfurt am Main on January 29, 1944. She and seven other women who were volunteers were killed while taking refuge in a cellar. She was 41 years old. After her death, her husband married Ottilie Möller (1903–1991) in 1948. They were also denied children.
In 1907, in the Karlsruhe district of Beiertheim-Bulach, Marie-Alexandra-Strasse was named after her.
