Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia (* August 6 jul. / 18th August 1819 greg. In the summer palace of Pavlovsk , † February 9 jul. / 21st February 1876 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was the eldest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I Pavlovich of Russia and his wife Alexandra Feodorovna (1798–1860), who was born as the Prussian Princess Charlotte .
Life
Marija Nikolajewna Romanowa married on July 14, 1838. Her husband Maximilian de Beauharnais was not considered a good match for a Tsar's daughter, but since Maria had announced that she would not marry if she could not stay in Russia, her father agreed Wedding too.
In the same year, the family was given the title of Prince or Princess Romanowsky in addition to their title of " Bavarian Dukes of Leuchtenberg ", which they had received from the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph . He was the 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg from the Beauharnais family . Seven children emerged from the joint relationship:

Marija's husband Maximilian died on November 1, 1852 and four years later Marija entered into another, this time morganatic marriage with Count Gregori Alexandrowitsch Stroganoff, with whom she had a son Greogri (1859-1859) and a daughter Helene (1861-1908) . Marija was artistically very gifted and her younger sister Olga, Queen of Württemberg , once said about her: “Oh, she has more talent and aptitude than the rest of us [siblings] put together. If only she had more strength of character! ” In the 1850s Marija was in charge of several women's schools, especially the Patriotic Institute . After the death of her first husband, she took over the chairmanship of the Academy of Arts from him.
