Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich ( Russian Александр Михайлович Романов , scientific. Transliteration Aleksandr Michajlovič Romanov * April 1 . Jul / 13. April  1866 greg. In Tbilisi , Government Tbilisi , Russian Empire ; † 26 February 1933 in Roquebrune , France ) was a Russian Grand Duke and Admiral .

Life

He was the fifth child of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich , fourth son of Tsar Nicholas I , and Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna, née. Princess Cäcilie von Baden- Hochberg, daughter of the Grand Duke Karl-Leopold of Baden-Hochberg . He grew up with five brothers and one sister in Tbilisi , where his father resided as Governor General of Transcaucasia . He went to school there and was called by the Georgian first name Sandro .

On August 6, 1894, he married his second-degree niece, Grand Duchess Xenija Alexandrovna , the eldest daughter of Tsar Alexander III . and sister of Tsar Nicholas II. They had a daughter and six sons. The marriage of the two was never very happy. Alexander had an American mistress and wanted to leave Xenija. In return, she retaliated equally with affairs. They tried to hide the broken marriage from the children.

From around 1906 he and his family lived partly in southern France due to differences of opinion with the Tsar. Here too he had extramarital relations. Xenija asked for a divorce several times, but he refused.

In 1891 he joined the Imperial Russian Navy and held various positions. Among other things, he was head of the administration of the Russian merchant shipping, chairman of the Russian naval association and shareholder in shipyards.

During the First World War he organized the army aviation forces , after the October Revolution he emigrated to Paris on a British ship , where he took part in the 1919 peace conference as a representative of the Romanovs . His biography Book of Memories , which is an important historical source on the royal family, was also published there.
