Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse (1893-1916)
Friedrich Wilhelm Sigismund Viktor Prince of Hesse (born November 23, 1893 in Frankfurt am Main , † September 15, 1916 in Cara Omer ) was a grandson of Emperor Friedrich III. and a prince from the Hessen-Kassel line of the House of Hessen .

Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessen was born as the first son of Prince Friedrich Karl von Hessen-Kassel (1868–1940) and Hessen-Rumpenheim and Princess Margarethe of Prussia (1872–1954). His maternal great-grandmother was Queen Victoria of Great Britain , his mother was the youngest sister of Kaiser Wilhelm II. He had five younger siblings:
- Maximilian (1894–1914), killed in Belgium ,
- Philipp (1896–1980),
- Wolfgang (1896–1989),
- Richard (1901–1969),
- Christoph (1901–1943), killed in Italy .
Life
He first attended the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main and then the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Potsdam . He then attended the main cadet school in Berlin-Lichterfelde together with his brother Max from 1909 to 1912 . He then continued his military training as an ensign at the Hanover War School. He then served as a lieutenant in the Thuringian Uhlan Regiment No. 6 . At the beginning of the First World War he was deployed with his regiment on the Western Front and entered France with it. At Laval he was badly wounded by a shot. The bullet injured one arm and both lungs. After recovering, he was transferred to a division staff on the Eastern Front. In 1915 he was wounded again there. Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse fell at Cara Omer in Romania . His brother Wolfgang brought the coffin home. Friedrich Wilhelm was buried in Kronberg Castle.
