The Weihenstephan Research Brewery (formerly Bavarian Experimental and Teaching Brewery) is a functioning brewery that is available to the Chair of Brewing and Beverage Technology at the Technical University of Munich as a teaching and research facility.

history

The beginnings

Between the years 1902 and 1904 the former building of the Bavarian teaching and experimental brewery was erected. After various difficulties, the brewery was finally able to start operations in 1906.

In 1927, a low output and permanent budget problems prompted the boss at the time, Hans Leberle , to take over a license for a high- pressure , filtered wheat beer, to produce the beer in the brewery and to sell it through the Bavarian State Brewery.

Redesign

In 2006, the experimental and research brewery of the Weihenstephan Science Center of the Technical University of Munich was completely rebuilt in the 100th year of its existence. On March 28, 2006, the new facility of the research brewery was inaugurated with the participation of TUM President Wolfgang A. Herrmann , the Lord Mayor of Freising Dieter Thalhammer , the professor of technology at the brewery Werner Back and his predecessor Ludwig Narziss .

List of master brewers

The head of the teaching and experimental brewery is incumbent on the professor of the chair for brewing and beverage technology. Another important position is that of the master brewer who now takes care of all organizational tasks relating to the brewery. This office has now been held by seven people since its inception.
