Fort Langley is a dependent settlement ( neighborhood ) with around 2700 inhabitants in the district of Langley , British Columbia , Canada . The place is on the Fraser River , about 40 km east of Vancouver .
history
The settlement emerged from the 1839 Fort Langley National Historic Site of the Hudson's Bay Company . The trading post was named after Thomas Langley, the former director of the Hudson Bay Company (1800-30).
The crown colony of British Columbia was proclaimed in the fort in 1858 , which is why Fort Langley calls itself the birthplace of today's province.
economy
The town's economy was based on forestry for a long time , but the large Interfor sawmill closed in 1990. Today the town thrives on tourism, culture and agriculture. Many residents commute to Vancouver, Langley, and other centers in the Metro Vancouver area .
