The Fort M of Warsaw Fortress was (also called Fort "Mokotów") part of the inner defense ring of the Warsaw Fortress . It was built in the 1880s. The facility is located in today's Warsaw district of Mokotów on Racławicka Street (No. 99) and is registered under the designation "Fort Mokotów I" in the city's monument protection register (object no. 808 of March 12, 1975).

history

Fort M was built near the former village of Mokotów , and is located on the south side of today's Racławicka Street. The fort had the same structures as the artillery fort of the inner defensive belt built at the time: following the ground plan of a pentagon with a rampart, a dry moat and masonry casemates. The wall contained capons on the forehead and shoulders, as well as half capons on the wings. The entire facility had a dimension of 33.6 hectares. Smaller connecting forts that no longer exist today were Fort Tscha-M “Rakowiec” in the west and Fort M-Chee “Odyńca” in the east.

After the modernization that became necessary due to the introduction of the explosive shell in the years 1889 to 1892, the fort served as a warehouse. Additional - protected - buildings were erected. The razing of the Warsaw fortress in accordance with the 1909 resolution was only partially carried out at Fort M. Some of the reinforced walls were removed, but the buildings remained. By resolution of the Council of Ministers on September 28, 1935, around 6 hectares of the outer area of the fort were given free of charge to the Mokotów municipality by the owner at the time, the Polish Ministry of Finance, and another 6 hectares were sold for 2.5 zloty / square meter.

Before the Second World War, there was a Polish radio station in the fort . As a result, the facility was bombed and heavily damaged during the Battle of Warsaw . From September 24th there was heavy fighting on the ground around the object, which was taken by German troops on September 26th. During the occupation , the German airport command Warsaw was housed here with around 500 members. During the Warsaw Uprising , the German units were able to hold the fort and subsequently used it to launch attacks against the bases of the Polish Home Army in Mokotów.

Use today

From 1961 to the late 1980s, the fort was the seat of the radio and television factory "ZARAT" ( Zakłady Radiowe i Telewizyjne "ZARAT" ), a producer of television and radio transmitters. Today the buildings in the fort from the pre-war and post-war period are used by various smaller companies as storage and office space. Workshops and clubs have also settled here. Casemates in the wall are being renovated and used as offices. In the outer areas of the fort, after the demolition, semi-detached houses and villas were built along the Balonowa, Olimpijska and Płatowcowa streets.
