The Fort Cha-M of Warsaw Fortress was (also called Fort "Rakowiec") one of the smaller forts of the inner belt Fort Warsaw and control of the street served by Krakow . The former fort is located southwest of Warsaw's old town .

The original Russian name was Щ-M. In Polish it is also only referred to as a defense post ("point oporu"). The designation Tscha-M (the connecting fort Tscha was to the west, Fort M eastwards) indicates that it was one of three works that were subsequently added to the existing line of defense. The names of the Warsaw forts used in German military maps are derived from the German transcription of the Russian letters . Tscha (the transcription of Щ is schtsch ) was distinguished from Tsche (Ч, tsch ) only by the appended vowel. In Polish, the fort was named after the nearby town of Rakowiec, which was later incorporated into Warsaw. Władysława Korotyńskiego, Waclawa Sierpinskiego, Szczepan Grzeszczyka streets surround the park.

history

The work was inserted into the already existing inner fort belt of the Warsaw Fortress between 1890 and 1892 . It consisted of an earth wall with a water-filled ditch and two concrete-secured shelters. The main direction of the battle was towards the southwest. Due to a drop in the water table, the remains of the ditch are now dry. The works covered an area of around 11,000 square meters with trench, the front was 250, the depth about 100 meters. One of the tasks of Fort "Tscha-M" was to secure the road to Cracow .

Already during the November uprising in 1830/1831 there was a ski jump at the same place , because the position could be defended well because of the large wetlands in the course of the Służewiecki stream. The order to demolish the Warsaw fortifications from 1909 was not carried out at Fort Tscha-M, the earth walls are still there - even if they have been removed by erosion, visible concrete components underneath seem undamaged. Today the area of the former fortress is used as a park for the housing estate in Rakowiec built after the war. The original structures of the fortress with the earth walls are still clearly visible.
