The Small Fortress of the Zegrze Fortress (Polish: Umocnienie Małe Twierdzy Zegrze ) is one of two works of the Zegrze Fortress near Zegrze - on the northern bank of the Narew that once flowed here , now part of the Zegrze reservoir . The fortress was built by the Russian occupation forces from 1892 to 1895 as part of the fortress of Greater Warsaw and secured the greater area to the north and east. The facility, which was modernized before the First World War , was one of the most innovative festivals in the Russian Empire . It is overgrown, but in good condition to this day. Even if the facility is no longer in use, it still belongs to the Polish army.

history

The small fortress was also called Fort "Karlinek". It was part of a "small restricted group" and adapted from the ground plan to the landscape. It had thicker walls and ceilings (in some places up to five meters) than the larger plant to the west, which was built at the same time . It also differed from the ventilation system that was more modern at the time and had metal hoods around 80 centimeters high on the roofs. Smaller modernization works were carried out here from 1906 to 1908. Two additional powder stores were also built on the banks of the Narew. One of the two buildings received an ornate facade, the other shows the year 1907. Ammunition and explosives to be stored were probably delivered by ship.

" Zegrze was a small, but very robust blocking post with lots of concrete structures and individual tanks "

- Gustav Meyer (Lieutenant Colonel), Der Durchbruch am Narew, July-August, 1915. Using official sources , issue 27/28, The Great War in Individual Representations , publisher: Gerhard Stalling, 1919, p. 15

The plant had a circumferential wall with a dry main ditch and another - probably partially filled with river water - ditch. The inner wall contained artillery positions. On the river side there were two more defensive walls, the lower one of which was flooded when the river was later dammed. The middle wall was used for infantry defense. The inner wall had at least one caponier that could be reached via a postern . There was also a small ravelin . Among other things, the Nordenfelt plant contained 57 mm high- speed firearms.

Use today

The small complex is now part directly adjacent and the Signal Corps of the Polish Armed Forces operated training center for telecommunications and information technology (Centrum Szkolenia Łączności i Informatyki) in Zegrze. The buildings, which were partially painted in camouflage colors in 2004, are in a good state of preservation, but are currently largely unused. They are occasionally used by the military for storage purposes. One of the two powder stores on the lake is now used by a rowing and sailing club to store the boats; the other property is for sale.
