The Kaponniere Malakoff, also Fort Malakoff , in Mainz was part of the Prussian fortress Mainz and within this part of the left bank of the Rhine fortification (Rheinkehlturm). It was built in the course of straightening the Rhine in various stages from 1843 and later expanded.

history

Fort Malakoff was built as a multi-storey gun storey. The construction and reconstruction time of this building on the left side of the Rhine falls in the years 1843 to 1873, mainly in the second fortification phase (1841-1848). The plant was named Fort Malakoff during the Crimean War in Russia in 1855. In 1863 ownership of the building was transferred from the fortress to the Hessian Ludwig Railway. From then on it was made available to socially disadvantaged residents as a poor house.

New plan of the city of Mainz from 1844

At the time of its creation, the work formed the southeastern outpost of the Rhine bank fortification. On the city map by J. Lehnhardt from 1844, the caponier is still in the middle of the undeveloped Lauterenviertel, referred to as the “New Casematen Corps” . It was erected at the height of the wooden gate of the medieval city fortifications. At that time there were several bathing boats on the Rhine opposite the caponier .

The construction

The caponier was a free-standing work in the later Rhine valley fortifications. Construction began under the director of geniuses and site management officer Major Johann Pientka, known as Haak, (director of geniuses 1837–1843). The caponier consists of a quarter-circle red sandstone block with loopholes and cannon loops, it consists of two floors. The side fronts and the facade facing the inner courtyard are provided with arched windows. Two stair towers flank the quarter circle. The courtyard behind the caponier in the throat is blocked by overman-high walls and an iron gate. On the side facing the Rhine there are only small, loopholed openings that break through the mighty walls.
