Fortaleza de Santa Teresa is a fortress in the department of Rocha , built in the 18th century by the Portuguese in southeastern Uruguay .

It is located near Ruta 9 , 36 km from the city of Chuy on the Brazilian-Uruguayan border . The distance to the capital Montevideo is about 305 km. The fortress is part of the Parque Nacional de Santa Teresa . The construction of the Fortaleza de Santa Teresa first began by the Portuguese in 1762. However, the completion was carried out by the Spaniards, who had meanwhile extended their sphere of influence here. Viceroy Pedro de Ceballosdecided to build a strong fortress at this point in this conflict-prone area near the border. It was built in the shape of an irregular pentagon designed to strategically monitor the area. In the course of history, the most diverse conflict parties met here. In addition to the Portuguese and Spaniards, there were also clashes between the Spaniards and the English, the Banda Oriental and the Portuguese, and Spaniards and Creoles. After all, the fortress served as a place of refuge for Manuel Oribe and his followers during the civil war of the young state of Uruguay . Later the Fortaleza de Santa Teresa lost its military importance. An army camp for horse breeding was stationed there until 1928.
