The Fortaleza de Belixe , also called Forte do Beliche , is a small fort on the approximately 50 meter high cliff of the Atlantic in Sagres , in the municipality of Vila do Bispo Portugal . It lies between the Cabo de São Vicente and the Fortaleza de Sagres .
The chapel Capela de Santa Catarina is located in the complex . Its baroque altarpiece has been in the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça , the church of the fortress of Sagres , since 1997 .
history
The rule of King Manuel I or his successor Johann III is said to be the period when the complex was built . assumed, i.e. the period between 1495 and 1557. No evidence is known for this. The damage to the system by Francis Drake in 1587 is documented. Under Philip III. the damage was repaired, the complex was largely rebuilt and reopened in 1632. The great earthquake and tsunami of 1755 caused considerable damage to the fortress. The reconstruction only took place as part of the preparations for the celebrations on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Heinrich the Navigator in 1960. A tea house was built on the foundations of the barracks . For a few years there was a restaurant and a few hotel rooms on the property that belonged to the Hotel Pousada de Sagres . For security reasons, access to the facility has been closed for a number of years, as the ongoing coastal erosion poses a risk of collapse.
