Forteau is a municipality ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

Forteau is on the south coast of Labrador , 10 km east of the provincial border with Québec . The place is on Forteau Bay , a small bay that opens onto Belle Isle Road .
Forteau is on the Trans-Labrador Highway ( Route 510 ) between L'Anse-au-Clair and L'Anse au Loup . The settlement of L'Anse-Amour is 6.4 km east of Forteau .

In the 2016 census, the community had a population of 409. Five years earlier it was 429. Thus, the population has decreased slightly in recent years. About a third of the population consists of Métis .
