Theodosius Forum
The Theodosius Forum ( Φόρο του Θεοδοσίου , Forum Theodosii ), originally called Forum Tauri ( Φόρο του Ταύρου ), was a square in the Byzantine capital Constantinople , roughly on the site of Beyazıt Square in today's Istanbul .
history
Originally it was built by Emperor Constantine I when the new capital Constantinople was being built under the name Forum Tauri . Emperor Theodosius I renewed the complex and rededicated it in 393 AD. The square was then named after him. In 1927/28 the Theodosius Forum was rediscovered during road construction work, and further discoveries were made in 1957/58.
location
Remains of a triumphal arch were found on the western edge of the forum , including pedestals and fragments of columns , which formed one of the two entrances to the forum. It was reached via the Mese , the ancient main street of Constantinople, today Yeniçeriler Caddesi, approx. 100 m east of the building of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Istanbul . Individual components of the sheet were in the development of Yerebatan cistern under Kaiser I. Justinian second used. In the center of the square was the Theodosius column , which was erected as early as 386 AD , which, like the arch, celebrated the triumph of Theodosius with his son Arcadius . During the foundation work in the area of the university, the remains of three basilicas were uncovered, one of which dates from the time of Justinian I.
