profile

The State Media Center Baden-Württemberg has, among other things, the legal mandate to ensure comprehensive "regional and cultural-historical image documentation" with regard to the federal state. Photos will be made available free of charge to teachers in Baden-Württemberg who can prove their eligibility. Publication is subject to a fee.

The photo archive has a stock of around 1 million original images, ranging from the pioneering days of photography to the present day. Around 80,000 of these images have been digitized and are available in an online database.

history

The photo archive had its origins in the German picture agency system of the 1920s. In addition to films, slides were part of the school-relevant media inventory of the state image agencies from the start. Forerunner institutions were the Württembergische Bildstelle (1923) and the Schwäbische Bildbühne in Stuttgart (1924), which ended in the Landesbildstelle Württemberg. Its sister institution was the Staatliche Bildstelle Baden, later the Landesbildstelle Baden. Both state image offices merged in 2001 to form today's State Media Center Baden-Württemberg. While the Stuttgart image tradition is intact, the Baden photo holdings from the period before 1945 were lost in the war.
