Klaus Paysan

Klaus Paysan (born January 8, 1930 in Stuttgart ; † September 17, 2011 ) was a German photographer and book author.

Life

Paysan attended lectures in applied science, art and philosophy at the University of Stuttgart . He financed his studies with recordings at weddings, dance lessons, graduation balls and parties. In the process he acquired knowledge of photography and flash technology and in 1951 pictures of him and his brother Hans Paysan were exhibited at the photokina . From 1952 he worked as a photo teacher in the youth center in Stuttgart and wrote articles for various photo magazines. As a result, he published his pictures in school books and as slide series for school lessons. Together with his brother he used his chemical knowledge and dealt with film development. They established contacts with the photo industry and were involved in testing new films and developing methods. Together, Hans and Klaus Paysan published an illustrated book about Stuttgart in 1957 and a few years later he published his photography skills in the handbook of nature photography for everyone .

After marrying the illustrator and author Angela geb. Roth in 1960 he traveled to Africa for the first time . This was the starting point for over 100 trips to this continent, where he photographed animals, land and people. Orders from Volkswagen AG and later from Daimler AG secured the financing. In 1964/65 the Franckh Kosmos publishing house sponsored part of the travel expenses as a “Kosmos Africa Safari”. For the following publications in the magazine Kosmos he received the Wilhelm Boelsche Medal in silver in 1967.

In 1966 he received the order from Agfa for the Afrikadiarama at the photokina. He was still determined by animal photography, as were the guided tours of the photo safaris in the 1970s. But the purely scientific documentation lost its importance for him and as early as 1964/65 the interest in the life of the African people predominated. In 1968 Paysan's first ethnographic book was published. The publication of a total of four aquarium books and the work for eight years in the production management and picture editing of an aquarium magazine made it possible for him to pursue his studies of the life and cults of the people in Africa. In 1980 the book he illustrated was published in Africa on his own behalf . In the then Landesbildstelle Württemberg, Stuttgart, he exhibited the results of his ethnographic studies, photographs and collections with the aim of highlighting and rehabilitating the traditionally living people in Africa in their human qualities.
