Photo engraving

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Photo engravings are engravings of photos, pictures or graphics on materials such as B. metal , stone or glass . Various engraving processes are used to produce photo engravings. Photo engravings are often found in the form of jewelry on gold , silver , stainless steel or stone pendants. Photo engraving is also becoming more and more popular in advertising technology. B. floodlights or even garments are refined with this technology.

Diamond engraving

In a diamond engraving, the image is engraved into the material by a CNC machine and a diamond tip . No surface material is removed, but rather compacted. The diamond stylus cuts the motif into the surface with a resolution of up to 600 pix / inch (depending on the manufacturer). The motif is recessed and cannot be rubbed off in comparison to laser engraving. The incident light is reflected through the conical recesses. Thus, the engraved image only appears from certain angles. Optimal engraving results can be produced on relatively soft and polished metals.

Laser engraving

With laser engraving, the image is engraved into the material by a CNC machine and a laser . Laser engravings are relatively cheap to produce, but they are not as abrasion-resistant as diamond engraving. This is due to the lower engraving depth. However, this process can be used to produce materials such as B. Fabrics and woods are engraved that would not be possible with diamond engraving. Jewelry manufacturers can use laser engraving to engrave photos in silver and gold, with the advantage that the photos will not fade over time. The photo is engraved in detail into the pendant and made darker using a special technique. This means that the photo remains easily recognizable.

Photo engraving using the metal printing process

In the metal printing process, a special printer is used for photo engraving. With an engraving pen, the motif is precisely hammered into the metal in a very high resolution. The advantage here is on the one hand that, similar to laser engraving, there is no loss of material and, on the other hand, the very precise execution, since the print can be adjusted in brightness, contrast and resolution depending on the subject. Metal printing is suitable for photos and texts. It can be engraved on various types of metal as well as acrylic.
