Four Stones for Kanemitsu is an American short - documentary from the year 1973 by Terry Sanders .

In the short documentary film, the Japanese-American artist Matsumi Kanemitsu shows the manufacturing process of his lithographs using the example of a multi-colored work of art created on four stone slabs. Kanemitsu uses a special technique that is derived from Sumi-e . The film offers an insight into the printing process from the processing of the printing plate to the mixing and use of the colors and also the post-processing with signature and seal. In addition to Matsumi Kanemitsu, his master printers Serge Lozingot and Gene Sturman and his curator Betty Fiske can also be seen at work.

The documentary was produced by June Wayne of the Tamarind Institute for Lithography , who also worked as a technical consultant on the film.

The film was nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 1974 Academy Awards, but lost to Princeton: A Search for Answers .
